Favela Descending

October - January 2008

Favela Descending created for the Concrete and Glass Festival in Shoreditch in 2008 is a six-screen installation which journeys through Favela Mineira, one of the most violent slums in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The many different viewpoints propel the audience into the ordinary daily life of this hidden, often lawless world rarely experienced by an outsider. Through the cinematic visions created by the six cameras in unison the observer is able to take in the little details in front, to the sides, below and above and behind as they descend through its labyrinthine alleyways set to music by Ned Bigham.
